Conservative party manifesto commitment to implement discounted rail travel for UK veterans is now in its final stages before launch and is now available for pre-registration.
The new railcard will enable veterans to get a 1/3 off the price of rail travel – including a 1/3 off for one spouse or friend also travelling with them. A 60% discount will also be applied for up to four children travelling.
A single annual veterans railcard will cost £21 for an introductory period (first year), before the price is then increased to £30 for a 12-month period thereafter.
There will be an option to purchase a three-year railcard for an introductory price of £61 – if purchased before 31 March 2021, increasing to £70 a year after.
You will also be able to download a digital version of the railcard to your smart phone.
When Can I Buy the Veterans Railcard?
Details on how you can purchase the card can be found below, but it is thought the rail discount cards will available to buy from October 2020.
Who Is Eligible for the Veterans Railcard?
All those who have served for more than one day in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve), Merchant Mariners – who have seen duty on specific military operations.

Where Can the Veterans Railcard Be Used?
Standard and First Class Anytime and Anytime Day singles or return train journeys – same applies to off-peak and super off-peak tickets.
When using your Oyster card off-peak pay as you go daily price cap and off-peak pay as you go single fares for journeys on National Rail, London Underground and the DLR (railcard holder only).
Some rail and sea journeys with Wightlink and Red Funnel Ferries to the Isle of Wight.
Rail tickets must be purchased before departure where possible.
Veterans Railcard WON’T Apply To
Season tickets, most London Underground and DLR tickets (unless using Oyster pay as you go), Eurostar tickets and some train company specific promotional offers.
