Personnel at the largest Royal Air Force (RAF) base in the country are being warned to maintain a distance of at least 2 meters apart during any fire or emergency evacuation.

A briefing note sent to personnel at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic stated:

“Should we need to evacuate the building please remember to maintain social distancing.”

The leaked email was sent to pilots, ground crew and civilian contractors at RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire.

One source at the RAF base said: “I think this instruction is ridiculous. If there is a fire, I’m getting my arse out of there by any means possible.”

The email went on to say that all other government health and safety legislation must be adhered to in the event of a fire breaking out at the military airbase.
